ROBERT WHITEHEAD STEPS DOWN AS EDITOR OF THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL STAFF Robert Whitehead is stepping down as Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, effective today. Mark Scott will serve as Editor, in addition to his ongoing responsibilities as Editor-in-Chief for the Metropolitan, Regional and Community Newspapers, pending completion of a search for a successor. Robert has wanted to return to the commercial side of the business, and we are delighted that he will assume new responsibilities as Director, Marketing and Newspaper Sales for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald, reporting to James Hooke, Managing Director, NSW. Since his appointment as Editor in October 2000, Robert has directed the paper’s outstanding coverage of September 11, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the Boxing Day tsunami. The Campaign for Sydney has won acclaim for its agenda-setting depth and intelligence. Last year, the Herald won more Walkley Awards for journalism than any other newspaper. All of us are appreciative of Robert’s tireless dedication and service in the role, and we look forward to his further contributions to the commercial strength of our publications. On behalf of the company, Fred Hilmer joins me in expressing our thanks to Robert for his commitment to The Sydney Morning Herald, to the staff, and to our excellence and leadership in journalism.
