Fairfax Media Journalism Intern Search Closes Today

Fairfax Media's search for the country's brightest journalism prospects closes at noon today (July 25, 2012).

The next step will be to read all applications carefully and to view the YouTube video clips that applicants were asked to submit this year.

All applicants will be advised by email on Tuesday, August 7, whether they will be required to sit a general knowledge, grammar and spelling and writing test which will be held throughout the country between 10am and 12 noon on Saturday, August 18.

The company's journalism intern scheme began in 2006 and some 70 have so far been selected. Many of them are now reaching senior levels in Fairfax newspapers and websites across the country.

The scheme offers participants:

  • The opportunity to study for a year at one of the five participating journalism training institutions
  • Work experience during course holidays at one of Fairfax's publications or websites
  • Reimbursement of course fees to successful applicants
  • Employment with a Fairfax publication at the conclusion of the course.
  • On-going training and career development.

Fairfax owns nine daily newspapers including The Dominion Post and The Press, two national Sunday newspapers, New Zealand's top news website, Stuff, magazines, a magazine publishing business, internet operations, and more than 50 community newspapers throughout the country.

Selected interns will undergo year-long training for a Diploma , Graduate or Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, Aoraki Polytechnic, Dunedin, Massey University, Wellington, the Waikato Institute of Technology, Hamilton, the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) or other training schools where applicable. Where possible, successful applicants will be trained in the institution of their choice.

Papers from the August 18 tests will be marked and assessed, and then presented to editors at newspapers, magazines or websites that applicants nominated as their preferred places of employment.

Interviews will take place after that. It is hoped that the process will be completed by late October.
