Fairfax Media has today launched a new application for the iPhone and iPad that will keep readers informed everywhere they go with the best of the award-winning website’s news, pictures and video.

Available for free download from iTunes, the app works on both highly visual devices, intuitively changing its display and functionality to suit both.

Fairfax Media’s Group Online Editor Sinead Boucher said in line with Fairfax’s belief that mobile applications should provide users with more interactive opportunities than websites, the iPhone app had been developed with a new “assignment” function that allows the Stuff newsroom to give readers reporting assignments, turning them into reporters on the ground for eye-witness accounts, news tips, photos and video.

“At Stuff we’re particularly keen to engage with our readers and encourage dialogue about news events,” Boucher said. “This app makes it easy for people to share stories with friends via Twitter and Facebook and have discussions via text, pxt and video” she said.

“Stuff already attracts the biggest audience for a news and information website in New Zealand, and this picture rich app will bring audiences the best of Stuff’s multimedia journalism, generated by Fairfax Media’s unparalleled network of journalists, photographers and videographers.

Online feedback today through Twitter, Facebook and has been extremely positive, while Iphone info website Iphonenewzealand was highly complimentary of the Stuff app in its review, making the comment that “even the BBC couldn’t quite achieve this level of polish in their BBC News app”.

“ now boast easily the most complete iOS offering of any New Zealand media outlet,” the Iphonenz reviewer stated. “Of the major players, only TVNZ matches Fairfax by offering both an iPhone and iPad app, but I believe the breadth and quantity of news on offer through Stuff makes it the superior product.”

Group Sales and Marketing Manager Sandra King said she was pleased to announce that 2 Degrees was the inaugural advertiser to partner with Fairfax in a sponsorship agreement for the launch of the Stuff app.

2degrees Head of Corporate Communications & Public Relations Bryony Hilless said: “2degrees gives its customers more mobile data, for less, with more time to use it, all without having to sign up to a long term contract. We think it’s just the thing for iPhone and iPad users, which is why we’re chuffed to partner with Stuff for the launch of their new app.”

The Stuff app is the first of a number of applications developed for the iPhone and iPad across all Fairfax titles that will be available in coming months, with new opportunities for advertisers to engage with a dedicated market of interested, captivated users going forward.
